I studied Business Information Technology at the University of Salford, which covered web development, e-commerce, marketing, information security and business strategy rather than just code. I started out in contract and temporary IT roles: first line support across Antler's retail stores, then third line support and development work at Vita Cellular Foams.
Then I spent nine years at NCC Group in one of the most specialised corners of the industry. Software escrow verification, proving that other people's software could be rebuilt from scratch by someone who had never seen it before.
Nine years is a long time in a niche. I took a career break to travel, and to go back to the contract and freelance work I had started out doing. What I did not expect was how much of it pulled me back towards what I studied and did before NCC: building websites, getting businesses found online, security, and how a business actually runs rather than just how its software is put together.
AI is the part that tied it together. It moved me from understanding systems to building them, and the cloud and automation certifications I had picked up along the way meant I was not starting from nothing. BAV Tech Solutions came out of that, first as background experimenting through 2024, then properly incorporated at the end of 2025.
Consulting, contract work, software escrow and technical projects come to me directly. The day to day client work sits under BAV Tech Solutions, the name I trade under, and each of the four areas below links through to the detail over there. They overlap more than people expect. A website that nobody can find is not really a website, and a business drowning in admin rarely needs new software so much as fewer manual steps.
Small business sites built to do a job, not to win design awards. That means fast pages, a clear explanation of what you do, and an obvious way to get in touch on a phone. I build them myself rather than dropping a template on you, and the price is agreed before anything starts. Most are live inside two to three weeks.

I look at where the hours actually go, then automate the parts worth automating and leave the rest alone. Sometimes the answer is a tool you already pay for.
Business efficiency and automationA digital tradesman is what I have ended up being: someone who turns up, fixes the thing, tells you what it cost before starting, and explains it in words you can repeat to somebody else. The tools are laptops and code rather than pipes and cable, but the job is the same shape.
It was not a plan. It came from spending nine years proving that other people's software could be rebuilt from scratch, then going independent and finding that most of what small businesses around Bolton actually needed was not a strategy deck. It was a website that loads, a laptop that works, a Google listing that shows up, and an hour of admin a day taken off their hands. Practical problems with practical answers.
A good plumber does not hand you a twelve week discovery phase. They look at the leak, tell you what it will cost, come back when they said they would, and leave you able to use the kitchen. I have never understood why technology decided it should work differently, and a fair few of my clients are tradespeople themselves, so the standard gets set by people who would notice immediately if I did not meet it.

Software escrow is an arrangement where a supplier deposits the source code and build materials for their software with an independent third party. If the supplier fails or stops supporting the product, the customer can obtain that material and keep the software running.
